COUNT ME IN …..
February 20, 2007 - 09:49am MST
AUPE Members Local 54 and 46,

In 2008, both Auxiliary Nursing and General Support Staff will again begin bargaining to reach a fair and equitable Contract for AUPE members. Both General Support and Auxiliary continue to struggle with the increased workloads, the endless expectation to work short staffed, numerous denied vacation requests, constant harassment for sick time, and the lack of recognition for our valuable contribution to the Healthcare Team. The General Support Staff do not get overtime, and a great number of the members were subjected to “red circling” through the employer’s unfair classification review.

As healthcare providers we are committed to the work we do and the excellence in care we give to patients and their families. The lack of recognition from the employer for the valuable work we do is apparent through your comments, and input from surveys/EMAC forms and the employers continued denial to accept that there is a recruitment and retention problem. Capital Health has expressed that there is no significant staffing problems, but we see it, live it, and have to work with these issues everyday—not the employer. Other employers and Health Regions across Alberta are recognizing the struggles and pressures on their employees and have offered salary increases to make positions more attractive and assist in recruiting and retaining their valued employees----but Capital Health says NO!

On the 13th of February our Local’s along with AUPE will launch the campaign “Let’s Get Ready”. This is your time to have your opinion counted. Over 32,000 health care workers across Alberta enter into collective bargaining in the spring of 2008. This campaign will demonstrate to the employer that the members of Alberta’s Largest Union mean business. Not only do we deserve a fair contract but we expect it!

Let February 13th be your first opportunity to get ready and be apart of your bargaining. Complete a pre-bargaining survey and sign your dues continuance card to reinforce to the employer we are united, strong, of one voice and prepared to take the action required to secure a contract we deserve. This is the time for us to begin to secure a fair and equitable contract for, our families, our community and ourselves!
